My Favorite Healthy Snacks I Always Pack When I Travel

July 30, 2017 by Rebecca Rosati

Traveling and flying is hard enough on your body, eating foods high in sodium and sugar only make it worse. Many times people relate travel with fast food and end up eating foods that leave you feeling fatigued, bloated, and tired. Whether you are traveling for vacation or work, a few simple changes and preparation will help you eat better and feel better.

Healthy Snacks

For all of my readers that don’t know, I lived in Orlando, FL for the past 12 years. I recently moved back to my hometown in Indiana to be close to family and follow my passion of food, baking and helping others live a healthier lifestyle.

My inspiration for this post came from my recent trip to FL to visit my best friend, Kat! When I say best, I mean she is the absolute best friend a girl could have. She is the girl who will drink wine with me at any time, who will always answer my calls, she keeps me stylish, is the master at doing my makeup, we have been through our hardest times together, and above all she has the kindest heart.

Meet Kat!

This picture is from my first night in Orlando at one of our favorite restaurants, Odum Thai & Sushi in downtown Orlando. Sushi is a must when we are together, always accompanied by a glass of wine… or two 😉 My plane was diverted to Tampa and we barely made it to the restaurant before closing, but all is good… we made it in time for two Roses, yes please! We go there for the Ahi Tuna Poke, it’s something I could eat everyday… and it’s served with a beautiful presentation in a martini glass, I just love it!

Dinner at Prato in Winter Park, one of our favorite restaurants on Park Ave… couldn’t leave Orlando without making a visit, and of course, squeezing in a little shopping 🙂

Now on to HOW TO EAT HEALTHY WHEN TRAVELING…

Here are some of my favorite foods to eat while traveling and a few tips to help you make better choices.

It’s a struggle to eat healthy snacks when at the airport, especially when you have temptation from all the chips and candy all around you. All it takes is a little preparation or knowing what snacks to buy in the airport.

PACK SNACKS that keep you full and satisfied. To avoid impulse bad food decisions, pack snacks so you always have something readily available. It’s easier on your wallet too.

HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE!!!

I can’t stress this enough, it’s so important to drink plenty of water while flying to stay hydrated. The air inside the cabin of a plane lacks humidity leading to dehydration. This can lead to discomfort and fatigue. Water will also help keep your skin fresh and help you eat less and avoid bad snack cravings.

Apple Pie Larabar – The original fruit and nut food bar

There is nothing sweeter than the classic American Dessert, Apple Pie and this Apple Pie Larabar is nothing short of sweet without all the guilt. Pass up the McDonalds line when rushing through the airport and substitute high calorie, nutrient dense apple pie for this nutrition bar. It’s equivalent to 1/2 cup of fruit, it’s gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and vegan. The ingredients are minimal and whole foods with no additives including Dates, Almonds, Apples, Walnuts, Raisins, and Cinnamon.

Justin’s Peanut Butter Pouch

There is nothing better in this world than peanut butter and with this on the go pouch it’s easy to throw in your purse or bag, it’s genius!! Plus, the Justin’s brand is All Natural with no added ingredients… simply peanuts, honey, palm oil, and salt AND it tastes amazing. Pack a banana or apple or buy at the airport and you have an easy, nutritious snack!

You can find these Justin’s Peanut Butter, Honey Squeeze Packs here.

Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds

Almonds

Almonds are a great source of protein to fill you up and they are a portable, healthy snack. I rarely leave the house without a bag of almonds in my purse. You never know when hunger strikes and having these little nuts on hand will help avoid temptation. The Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds are my favorite.

Extra Spearmint Sugarfree Gum

I never travel without a pack of gum, especially when flying. The changes of air pressure in the cabin when taking off and landing causes inequality with the pressure in my ears. The act of chewing gum helps equalize that pressure, relieving the pain and discomfort. An added plus, you will have fresh breath… and remember to keep drinking water as hydration and swallowing can help with pressure in your ears too!

I hope you find these tips helpful and, as always, please feel free to comment with any tips or feedback.
